Cold Spring Tavern

Cold Spring Tavern is one of the most atmospheric live music settings in all of California, a former stagecoach stop dating to 1868 that sits in the Los Padres National Forest on San Marcos Pass, about 15 miles from downtown Santa Barbara. The drive up Highway 154 is part of the experience: winding through the mountains, passing the occasional Harley-Davidson parked outside, and arriving at a collection of rustic log cabins that feel genuinely untouched by the modern world. It is the kind of place that makes you feel like you traveled somewhere to get there, and you did. Live music happens every weekend, with bands playing outdoors in the courtyard on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in the early afternoon. The outdoor stage and patio area can accommodate around 100 listeners, while the historic Log Cabin Bar holds about 50 inside, where the bar is 21 and over. The music leans toward local acts with roots in country, Americana, blues, and rock, and the Sunday slot is typically reserved for regular performers who have built a relationship with the venue. The food is the stuff of regional legend: tri-tip sandwiches grilled over red oak on the weekend outdoor BBQ, plus onion rings, chili, and a wild game menu inside the tavern. Whether you come for a plate of tri-tip and a cold beer or to watch a local country band on a sunny Sunday afternoon with the mountains behind the stage, Cold Spring Tavern delivers an experience that is genuinely irreplaceable. There is simply nowhere else in Southern California quite like it.
