The Caravan Lounge is one of San Jose's oldest and most dependable live music bars, a friendly owner-operated dive right in the heart of downtown that has been championing local and touring bands for decades without ever charging a cover. Open 365 days a year, seven days a week, the Caravan is the kind of bar that makes itself indispensable not by trying to be something it is not but by doing what it does with total consistency and genuine warmth. The room is small and unpretentious with a pool table, a well-stocked bar with one of the best happy hours downtown Monday through Friday, and a late night Power Hour every night from 11pm to midnight that keeps the vibe alive long after other bars start winding down. The music calendar is impressively wide, spanning original rock, punk, metal, indie, alternative, burlesque nights, comedy open mics on Wednesdays, and open mic for musicians on Sundays, with live original bands taking the stage Friday and Saturday nights. Owner Rachel is deeply invested in the venue and the community it serves, and the booking process is direct and accessible. The Caravan has hosted plenty of local bands' first-ever shows, and it regularly features smaller touring acts that go on to much bigger things. The crowd ranges from longtime regulars to college students to anyone who wanders in off Almaden Avenue and finds themselves staying for three hours because the band is too good to walk away from.
