The Phoenix Theater

The Phoenix Theater is one of the most historically significant and culturally irreplaceable live music venues in Northern California, a nonprofit community institution in downtown Petaluma that has been rising from the ashes and reinventing itself since it first opened in 1905 as the Hill Opera House. Over more than a century of continuous existence, the building has hosted Harry Houdini, Enrico Caruso, and Lily Langtree in its opera house days; served as a movie house; and then in the early 1980s became the North Bay's most important rock and roll launch pad, where then-unknown bands including Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Green Day, Primus, Mr. Bungle, The Ramones, Sublime, and Pennywise all played on their way to becoming worldwide phenomena. Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell played his last show with the band at the Phoenix on May 24, 1996. Today the Phoenix is owned by the nonprofit Petaluma Phoenix Center, Inc., and operated with a mission to foster the emotional, physical, and social development of the young people it serves through music, the arts, health, and wellness. Theater manager Tom Gaffey has been the soul of this institution for over 40 years, keeping the doors open every day from 3 to 7pm as a safe space for teens with no cover charge. The Phoenix runs shows primarily on Friday and Saturday nights with a general admission floor, an elevated balcony, punchy sound, and a crowd that knows exactly why this place matters. For music listeners of every age, the Phoenix is not just a venue, it is a living piece of rock and roll history that is still being written.
